Muttie's Sugar Cookies {my great-grandma}~ Ashley Nelson

1 1/2 c. shortening

1 1/2 tsp. salt

3 c. white sugar

6 Tbsp. milk

3 tsp. baking powder

1 1/2 tsp. grated lemon rind

1 1/2 tsp. nutmeg

6 eggs (beaten)

6 c. flour

1 1/2 tsp. baking soda

Combine shortening, salt, lemon rind, nutmeg, & blend. Add sugar, then cream the mixture. Add eggs and milk and mix well. Sift flour with baking powder and baking soda, and add to creamed mixture. Refrigerate dough overnight (optional), covered with a damp cloth. Drop by teaspoonfuls or roll out and cut with cookie cutters. Cook at 400 degrees for 8 minutes. Makes a large batch {like 7-12 dozen} of cookies depending on the size. Decorate with your choice of frosting. These are great for every holiday.
