1 qt. dark Karo corn syrup
1 lb. butter
1 lb. brown sugar
1 Tbs. baking soda
1/4 cup. lukewarm water
1 Tbs. cinnamon
1 tsp. Nutmeg
5 lb. sack of flour
Boil Karo syrup in a large pot. Add the butter, brown sugar, and dissolve then cool mixture to room temperature. Dissolve baking soda in water and stir into first mixture, along with cinnamon and nutmeg. Slowly add 4 1/2 lbs. of a 5 lb. sack of flour. Remove from pan and knead mixture well. Let stand refrigerated overnight, covered with a damp cloth. Grease the top of the dough and then roll small balls into "snakes" or "fingers" (about 1/2" across & any length - you will cut them—this is fun for kids to help with). Cut into 1/2" pieces and spread onto pan, really close together. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes. Makes 7 pounds. Store in an airtight container and enjoy throughout the holiday season.
*This recipe makes a large batch - and takes a couple of days. Half the recipe if you don't have a lot of time to make them/bake them. The dough is fine to refrigerate for a week if you don't get them all made at once.
